Yes, Claude Sonnet 5.5 is free in one place open to everyone: Anthropic says anyone can chat with it on Claude.ai, on the web, iOS, and Android. Claude Code isn’t on the Free plan, the Claude API has no free tier, and a free chat account doesn’t come with an API key. A few programs for teachers, open-source maintainers, researchers, and startups add free access on top.
Sonnet 5.5 launched on September 28, 2026, at $2/$10 per million input/output tokens, the same price as Sonnet 5. This guide lists every free route confirmed on official pages, flags the ones that don’t work, and shows the cheapest path after free. The Claude.ai Free plan (open to anyone)
Start here. Sign up at claude.ai or install the iOS or Android app, and you can chat with Sonnet 5.5 at no cost. Anthropic’s pricing page marks Sonnet and Haiku as included on Free; Opus and Fable are not.

One detail to check: Anthropic hasn’t said Sonnet 5.5 is the default model on Free (Sonnet 5’s launch post said that about Sonnet 5). Confirm Sonnet 5.5 in the model picker before a long session.
Free covers more than chat: web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts, voice mode, Skills, and up to 5 Projects. It leaves out Research, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome, and usage credits.
Get more out of the Free plan
- Plan around the 5-hour window. The help center says Free has a session-based limit that resets every five hours, and message counts “vary based on demand.” There’s no fixed number, so ignore sites that quote one.
- Put reusable context in a Project. Store your style guide, API spec, or notes once instead of pasting them into every chat.
- Expect the occasional model switch. Prompts flagged by Anthropic’s cyber or frontier-LLM-development classifiers fall back to Sonnet 5 automatically, and the switch is visible. Flagged biology and distillation requests are blocked instead.
Free routes for teachers, maintainers, and researchers
GitHub Copilot Pro for teachers and maintainers
GitHub says verified teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects “may be eligible for free access to Copilot Pro” (Copilot plans). Sonnet 5.5 is on Copilot Pro as of September 28, in VS Code, JetBrains, Xcode, Copilot CLI, and the coding agent (GitHub changelog).
The catch is billing. Copilot charges Sonnet 5.5 at list pricing ($2/$10 per million tokens) from Pro’s 1,500 monthly AI credits, at $0.01 each. That’s about $15 of usage a month. Rollout is gradual. Our guide to getting GitHub Copilot Pro for free has more on this route.
Claude Team plan for scientists
Anthropic offers free standard Team seats to groups led by principal investigators at accredited universities and nonprofit research institutes; Premium seats are $15 per user per month. Every seat includes Claude Science, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. The offer lasts 12 months, goes to a limited number of groups, and excludes for-profit companies. The page doesn’t name Sonnet 5.5, but Anthropic’s pricing page lists Sonnet on Team.
Research credit programs
The External Researcher Access Program applies $1,000 in API credits to approved AI safety and alignment researchers. The credits cover the standard model suite, not the Claude web app, and applications are reviewed on the first Monday of each month.
AI for Science offers up to $50,000 in API credits per project, and any researcher can apply. The same August post says biology and chemistry researchers stay limited to Opus-class models for now, a cap aimed at Fable and Mythos-class access; it predates Sonnet 5.5 and doesn’t mention it.
Free credits for startups
Claude for Startups. Venture-backed startups can apply for free API credits and priority rate limits. You need institutional equity funding, a company founded in the last four years, and no prior Anthropic startup credits. Anthropic doesn’t publish the amount, and the credits work only on the first-party Claude API, not Bedrock or Vertex AI.
AWS Activate. AWS made Activate credits redeemable for third-party models on Amazon Bedrock in 2024, Anthropic included. Sonnet 5.5 is on Bedrock as anthropic.claude-sonnet-5-5. If you drive it from Claude Code on Bedrock, the sonnet alias still resolves to Sonnet 4.5, so pin the full model ID.
What is NOT free
These show up in “free Sonnet 5.5” searches and don’t deliver.
Claude Code on the Free plan. The pricing table marks it “No” for Free. It’s in paid plans only.
The Claude API. The Console is prepaid: you add credits before your first call. No official page mentions a free sign-up credit, so treat the “free $5 console credit” on third-party blogs as unconfirmed. Credits expire after a year and aren’t refundable.
GitHub Copilot Free and Student. These plans get models through auto model selection only, and Sonnet 5.5 isn’t in the auto list.
Cursor Hobby. Sonnet 5.5 bills from Cursor’s “Other Models” pool, which Cursor includes on Pro, Pro Plus, and Ultra. Nothing official says Hobby can use it.
OpenRouter. There’s no :free variant, only anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5 at $2/$10 and a :batch version at $1/$5.
Vercel AI Gateway. Free accounts get $5 of credit every 30 days, but the free tier covers a subset of models, and Sonnet 5.5 isn’t in it.
Cloud trial credits. Google Cloud’s $300 trial can’t be spent on generative AI partner models offered as a managed API, which covers Claude. Claude in Microsoft Foundry needs a paid Azure subscription; free trial and credit-only accounts aren’t supported. No official page says AWS Free Tier credits pay for Claude on Bedrock, so assume they don’t.
Unofficial chatbot wrappers. A bot named after Sonnet 5.5 on a third-party aggregator isn’t necessarily Anthropic’s. One we checked was a placeholder from an unrelated account. Stick to Claude.ai and the official apps.
When you outgrow free
For chat and Claude Code: Pro. Pro costs $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) or $20 monthly, gives you at least 5x Free’s usage per five-hour session, and includes Claude Code. Max starts at $100 a month.
Claude Code needs v2.1.284 or later for Sonnet 5.5, and its default model on Pro is Opus 5.5. Start a session on Sonnet 5.5 with:

For scripts, apps, and agents: the API. A paid chat plan doesn’t include API access, so the API is billed separately at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. A request with 2,000 input tokens ($0.004) and 1,000 output tokens ($0.010) costs about $0.014. Four levers keep it cheap:
- Lower
output_config.effort. The API default ishigh; Anthropic suggestsmediumorlowfor chat. - Use
thinking: {"type": "between_tools"}, Sonnet 5.5’s replacement for turning thinking off. It works only atlow,medium, orhigh. - Cache repeated prefixes. The minimum cacheable prompt is 512 tokens, and cache reads cost $0.20 per million instead of $2.
- Batch non-urgent jobs at 50% off: $1/$5.

Send it and read the usage object to see what you were billed for; a short prompt like this costs well under a cent. Save the request with two assertions:
stop_reason, not only status. A refusal comes back as HTTP 200 withstop_reason: "refusal".usagewithin budget. Rerun when you change effort or the prompt, and compare.
Copying an old Sonnet 5 request? Remove thinking: {"type": "disabled"} and any non-default temperature, top_p, or top_k. Each returns a 400 on Sonnet 5.5.
