The Claude Ultra plan is the new name for Max 20x. On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Claude Max ($100 a month) and Max 20x to Claude Ultra ($200 a month). Verified Ultra accounts lose the 5-hour usage window, keep a weekly cap of 10x Pro, and get $200 a month in Claude API credits.
Prices didn’t change, and Max 20x subscribers moved over automatically. This guide covers the new limits, verification, the API credits, and how to choose between Max and Ultra.
What is the Claude Ultra plan?
Claude Ultra is Anthropic’s top individual subscription, priced at $200 a month on the web. It replaces Max 20x at the same price. It gives you 10 times the Pro plan’s weekly usage, no 5-hour limit once your account is verified, Claude Code in the same subscription, early access to new models and features, and $200 a month in Claude API credits.
The Ultra help article lists those benefits and adds a few details worth knowing before you pay:
- Ultra is billed monthly only. There is no annual Ultra plan.
- Mobile app prices may differ from the $200 web price.
- The weekly limit covers all models, and Fable has a separate weekly limit of its own.
- Anthropic says additional caps may apply at its discretion.
If you used Max 20x, think of Ultra as the same seat with a different meter.
Claude Ultra vs Max vs Pro: the new lineup
Here is the lineup as it reads on the Claude pricing page today (checked November 2, 2026):
| Plan | Price | 5-hour usage | Weekly usage | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited | Limited | None |
| Pro | $20 monthly, or $17/mo billed annually | 1x | 1x | None |
| Max (was Max 5x) | $100 | 5x Pro | 5x Pro | $100 |
| Ultra (was Max 20x) | $200 | No 5-hour limit (verified accounts) | 10x Pro | $200 |

Max still has both meters, each at 5x Pro. Ultra’s headline multiple is 10x Pro per week, not 20x: the old “20x” described the session window, which Ultra drops.
Our earlier Claude Max plan comparison predates the rename, so read its “Max 20x” as “Ultra.”
The 5-hour limit is gone, the weekly cap is not
The 5-hour window was the limit heavy users hit first: a long Claude Code run burned the session allowance, then you waited for a reset with most of your weekly budget untouched.
On a verified Ultra account, that wait is gone. You spend your weekly allowance at whatever pace your work needs: a 10-hour refactor Monday, nothing Tuesday.
What Ultra is not:
- Not unlimited. Some coverage calls Ultra “unlimited.” It isn’t. The weekly cap of 10x Pro still applies, and so does the separate Fable weekly limit.
- Not a bigger weekly bucket. Secondary coverage of the announcement reports weekly limits did not change with the rename. [VERIFY: confirm against Anthropic’s own announcement before publish]
- Not instant for every account. The change rolls out in stages, and unverified accounts keep a temporary 5-hour limit.
If you want the mechanics of the weekly reset and how Pro and Max users budget around it, our weekly rate limits guide walks through it. For Pro specifically, see Claude Pro limits.
How Ultra account verification works
You don’t apply for verification. According to the Ultra help article, Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using account and payment history. Until your account is verified, a temporary 5-hour limit applies, and it’s removed automatically once verification completes.
Check your status in three steps:
- Open Claude and go to Settings > Usage.
- Look for a Current session bar.
- If there’s no Current session bar, your account is verified and has no 5-hour limit. If the bar is there, the temporary limit still applies.
One trap: verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step. The help article says it does not remove the temporary limit. A newer account that still shows the bar has nothing to submit; wait for the automatic check.
Claude Ultra API credits: $200 a month for the Claude Platform
This is the part of the change most developers will feel. Max and Ultra plans now include monthly credits for the Claude API: $100 on Max, $200 on Ultra. Team plans get them too, pooled and capped at $500 a month. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans aren’t eligible.
The rules come from Anthropic’s API credits for subscribers doc and the matching help article:
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Claim window | New subscribers can claim after 7 days on an eligible plan |
| How to claim | Link one Claude Console organization in Settings > Billing on claude.ai |
| Refresh | Each billing cycle, shortly after your plan payment |
| Rollover | None. Unused credits expire at the end of the cycle |
| Spending order | Included credits first, then any credits you bought |
| Payment method on Claude Platform | Not required |
| Changing the linked org | Only through support, so link the org you plan to build in |
What the credits cover, and what they don’t
Covered:
- The Claude API, including the Messages and Message Batches APIs
- Claude Managed Agents
- The Claude Agent SDK, including
claude -pwhen it runs with an API key from the linked organization - The Playground in the Claude Console
Not covered:
- Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop app or web, including the GitHub Action
- Extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork
- Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry or Claude Platform on AWS
So the credits are a separate budget for things you build, not more Claude Code. To point them at a headless agent, see our Claude Agent SDK with a Claude plan guide for setup. For the wider history of Anthropic credit offers, see Claude API credits.

Rate limits and spend caps still apply
Credits don’t change how API rate limits and spend limits work. Usage paid with credits counts toward your organization’s monthly spend cap. An organization linked to an eligible plan moves up to at least the Start usage tier, and the doc says organizations whose monthly credits are over $200 move up to at least Build. Ultra’s $200 sits at that line, not over it, so plan on Start tier unless you already qualify for more. The Claude API rate limits post explains the tiers.
When credits run out and you have no purchased balance, API requests stop until the next refresh. Nothing is charged to your Claude plan.
Let Claude Code put your Ultra credits to work with Apidog CLI
Credits that expire monthly are only worth something if your apps call the API. The fastest way to prove your linked organization works, and catch a bad key or wrong model ID early, is to have your coding agent build and run a Messages API smoke test.
Install Apidog CLI, log in, and add the Apidog skill to your agent:
npm install -g apidog-cli@latest
apidog login --with-token <YOUR_APIDOG_TOKEN>
npx -y skills add https://apidog.com # pick Claude Code when prompted
Then give Claude Code one prompt:
In Apidog project <projectId>, create a test case for POST https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages
with headers x-api-key: {{ANTHROPIC_API_KEY}} and anthropic-version: 2023-06-01.
Send a one-line prompt to the cheapest current Claude model with max_tokens 50.
Assert status 200, a non-empty content[0].text, and usage.output_tokens > 0.
Run it against environment <envId> and summarize any failures.
The agent checks the payload shape before it writes anything, then creates and runs the case:
apidog cli-schema get test-case-create
apidog cli-schema validate test-case-create --file case.json
apidog test-case create --project <projectId> --file case.json
apidog run --test-case <caseId> --project <projectId> -e <envId> -r cli,json
Keep the API key out of the test file. Store it as a secret environment variable in Apidog, or pass it at run time with --env-var "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-...". A 401 means the key isn’t from the linked organization or was revoked. The Your credit balance is too low error means the month’s credits are gone.
Add --upload-report to the same apidog run command if you want to open the result in the Apidog app later. The same command with -r junit drops into CI; see Apidog CLI in Claude Code for the full agent setup. Apidog’s Free plan covers up to 4 users, so a small team can run this without another subscription.
Is Claude Ultra worth it?
Ultra makes sense when the 5-hour window, not the weekly cap, is what stops you. Use this checklist:
- Pick Ultra if you run long agent sessions in bursts and kept hitting the session reset on Max 20x, or if you’ll actually spend the $200 in API credits each month on something you build.
- Pick Max if you work in steady daily sessions that fit inside 5x Pro per window and per week. You still get $100 a month in API credits.
- Stay on Pro if you rarely hit limits. Pro doesn’t include API credits.
- Go Team if several people need seats and you want pooled credits, capped at $500 a month.
Do the credit math honestly. Ultra costs $100 more than Max and adds $100 more in API credits. If you already pay for API usage, that offsets real spend, and the upgrade buys you no 5-hour window plus double the weekly allowance. If you’d never touch the API, the credits are worth $0 to you.
FAQ
Is Claude Ultra the same as Max 20x?
Yes. Ultra is Max 20x renamed, at the same $200 monthly price, and subscribers moved over automatically. Verified Ultra accounts have no 5-hour limit, and the weekly allowance is listed as 10x Pro.
Does Claude Ultra have unlimited usage?
No. Ultra drops the 5-hour window for verified accounts, but a weekly cap of 10x Pro still applies, Fable has its own weekly limit, and Anthropic may add caps.
Why do I still see a 5-hour limit on Ultra?
Your account probably isn’t verified yet. Anthropic verifies automatically from account and payment history and removes the temporary limit when it’s done. Phone verification at checkout doesn’t count. Check Settings > Usage: no Current session bar means you’re verified.
Can I use Claude Ultra API credits for Claude Code?
Not for interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web. The credits cover the Claude API, Managed Agents, the Agent SDK and the Console Playground, including claude -p when it runs with an API key from your linked organization.
Do unused Claude Ultra API credits roll over?
No. Credits refresh each billing cycle and unused credits expire at the end of it. If you cancel, new credits stop, but credits you already have stay usable until they expire.
Is there an annual Claude Ultra plan?
No. The help article says Ultra is available only as a monthly subscription. Pro is the plan with an annual option, at $17 a month billed annually.
