MACH: the standard most people mean

When teams say “composable,” they usually mean a stack that follows MACH principles. MACH is an acronym, and the MACH Alliance (founded in 2020) promotes it as the architecture for open, composable systems.

Notice that composable, headless, and MACH aren’t synonyms. Headless is one letter of MACH. MACH is a specific, opinionated way to build composable systems. Composable is the umbrella over all of it.

Composable enterprise vs composable architecture

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they sit at different levels. The composable enterprise is the business-model framing. It’s the idea of organizing the whole company around reusable business capabilities, each exposed as an API, so teams can recombine them to launch products and respond to change without rebuilding from scratch.
