Written by the Apidog team. We have tried to be fair to Postman, and we say plainly where Postman is the better choice. Pricing checked against both pricing pages on September 8, 2026.

The short verdict. Stay on Postman if you rely on the public API Network, need passive production monitoring with drift detection across regions, or your organization has already standardized on Postman governance rules. Move to Apidog if you are a team of two to four paying for Postman seats just to share a workspace, if you want spec-first design, mocking, testing, and published docs in one project, or if you need EU data residency, a self-hosted runner, or an on-premises deployment without an enterprise-only conversation.

Current pricing, side by side

Postman restructured its plans in March 2026. The Basic and Professional tiers are gone, and the Free plan is now a single user. Older comparisons on the web, including some of ours, still quote the retired tiers. This table is the current one.

Postman's Solo plan is $9 for one person; the moment a second person needs the workspace, you are on Team at $19 per seat. Apidog's free plan covers four people, and its first paid seat is $9. Six things teams actually compare

We picked these six because they are the questions that come up on Reddit, Hacker News, and the SailPoint and Hugging Face forum threads where people ask whether anyone has "made the switch".

1. Free-plan collaboration

Postman Free is a personal workspace. You can send requests, run collections without a cap, and publish docs, but you cannot invite a teammate. Solo does not change that. Collaboration starts at Team, $19 per user.

Apidog Free is a shared project for up to four people with live co-editing. Two people can edit the same endpoint spec and see each other's cursors, the way a shared document works. Comments, activity history, and sprint branches are in the free tier. For a startup with three engineers, that is the whole comparison.

2. Test runs and automation

Both tools now offer unlimited collection runs, which removes what used to be the loudest complaint about Postman. The difference is in how tests are built.

Postman tests are JavaScript in pre-request and post-response scripts, chained with Collection Runner or drawn in Flows. It is flexible and it is code. Apidog tests are built as scenarios: you assemble endpoint cases into a flow, add assertions visually (JSONPath, status, response time, schema match), pass values between steps, and attach a data table for data-driven runs. Scripts are still available when you need them, and Apidog runs Postman-style pm.* scripts, so migrated collections keep their test logic. One Apidog-specific piece worth knowing: tests can query a SQL database directly as a step, so you can assert that a POST actually wrote the row. SQL databases are covered on the free plan; NoSQL sources (MongoDB, Redis, ClickHouse) come with Basic.

3. Mocking

Postman mock servers are unlimited on every plan and live in the cloud, with local mocks available in the desktop app. You define examples per request and the mock serves them.

Apidog generates a mock for every endpoint the moment you define its response schema, with no setup, and the mock data follows the schema (a field named email gets an email address, a createdAt gets a timestamp). You can add expectation rules that return different responses based on request parameters, and write custom mock scripts for anything the rules cannot express. The mock runs locally by default and can be exposed as a cloud mock. For frontend teams waiting on a backend, this is the feature that changes the day-to-day. 4. Documentation and publishing

Postman publishes collection documentation from the workspace, with custom branding on paid plans and the public API Network for discovery. If you want your API found by developers who are not your customers yet, the API Network is a real distribution channel and Apidog has nothing equivalent.

Apidog publishes an interactive docs site from the same spec you design and test against, so the docs cannot drift from the tests. Docs support a custom domain, versioning, multiple environments, and a "try it" console, with an IP allowlist from the Professional plan and multiple sub-sites on Enterprise. The published docs can also be connected to AI coding tools through the Apidog MCP Server, which lets Cursor or Claude Code read your API spec as context.

5. CI/CD and the CLI

Postman's Newman and the newer Postman CLI run collections in a pipeline and report back to the workspace. Apidog's CLI does the same for test scenarios and adds project management commands (endpoints, schemas, environments, branches, mocks) so the pipeline can do more than run tests. Apidog generates the pipeline snippet for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and Jenkins from the Tests page, and tests can be triggered by a Git commit.

Both tools can fail a pipeline step when tests fail, which is what blocks a merge in practice. Where they differ is design-time control: Apidog lets you mark the main branch as protected so that changes from a sprint branch go through a merge request reviewed by an admin before they land on the spec everyone tests against.

6. Self-hosting and data residency

Postman is a cloud product. EU data residency is an Enterprise option, and the desktop app can work with local collections in a lightweight mode, but the workspace lives in Postman's cloud.

Apidog offers three answers. Apidog Europe is a separate EU-hosted instance. The self-hosted runner is a Docker container you run inside your own network to execute scheduled tests, scheduled imports, and mocks against services that are not reachable from the internet. And there is an on-premises edition of the whole platform for organizations that cannot use a SaaS at all. If your APIs live behind a VPN, this section decides the comparison.

What Postman says about Apidog, and what is true

Postman publishes a comparison page about Apidog. Its central line is that Apidog "can build APIs" while Postman "helps run them at scale". Here is our answer to each of its claims, with links to our documentation so you can check for yourself. Where Postman is right, we say so.

"No org-wide governance; standards vary by project and drift." Partly right. Apidog does not have a Spectral-style rulebook that lints every project in the organization against one style guide the way Postman's governance feature does. What Apidog has is per-project control: member roles and permissions, protected branches with admin-approved merge requests, reusable schemas and components, and an Enterprise-level audit log. If you need one rulebook enforced across fifty teams, Postman's governance tooling is more mature today.

"No production monitoring depth: no passive monitoring, drift detection, multi-region monitoring, or incident integrations." Mostly right. Apidog's scheduled tasks run your test scenarios on a timer from a self-hosted runner and notify a channel or email on failure. That is active checking, not passive observability, and it does not run from multiple regions. If monitoring is the job, Postman Monitors or a dedicated observability tool are the better fit.

"Project-centered, with no API catalog." Half right. Apidog's API Hub is a catalog of published APIs, and an organization can publish several documentation sites. It is not a portfolio-wide inventory of every API in the company the way Postman's Private API Network is meant to be. For a large enterprise doing API discovery across hundreds of services, that is a real gap.

"Nothing blocks a merge." Not right. Apidog test suites run in GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and Jenkins through the CLI, and a failed run fails the job, which is exactly how a merge gets blocked in any CI system. Inside Apidog, a protected main branch requires a merge request and an admin's approval before spec changes land.

"Cannot detect when production behavior diverges from the spec." Right, for passive detection. Apidog can detect divergence actively: scheduled scenario runs validate live responses against the response schema and fail on mismatch. It will not observe real user traffic and flag drift the way a gateway-side monitor does.

"No public API network, private API network, or partner distribution layer." Right. Apidog publishes docs sites and an API Hub; it does not run a marketplace. If distribution through the Postman API Network is part of your go-to-market, keep Postman for that.

On enterprise security, which the page groups under "hidden costs". Apidog Enterprise has SAML 2.0 SSO with Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, and JumpCloud guides, SCIM provisioning with group-to-team mapping, audit logs with CSV export and an API for your SIEM, a doc IP allowlist, an EU region, and an on-premises edition. Those are the controls most security reviews ask for, and they are documented rather than negotiated.

Migrating from Postman

Apidog imports Postman collections and environments directly, keeps folder structure, converts pm.* scripts, and can re-import on a schedule (every three hours on Free, every 30 minutes on Basic, every 10 minutes on Professional) if you want to run both tools for a while. Be honest with yourself about these before you move.

If none of those apply and you are a small team paying per seat for a shared workspace, the comparison is short. Import your collections into a free Apidog project, run your tests, and see whether the four-person free plan covers you.

FAQ

Is Apidog a good Postman alternative? For teams that want design, mocking, testing, and docs in one project, yes. For organizations that need governance across many teams, passive monitoring, or the API Network, Postman still wins those specific jobs.

Does Postman still limit collection runs? No. As of the March 2026 plan change, collection runs are unlimited on every Postman plan, including Free. The old 25-runs-per-month limit no longer exists.

Can I use Apidog for free with my team? Yes, up to four users on the free plan, with unlimited runs, mocking, real-time collaboration, and branches. Paid seats start at $9 per user per month on annual billing, with a 14-day trial.

Does Apidog run Postman scripts? Yes. Imported collections keep their pm.* pre-request and test scripts, and Apidog's script runtime supports the Postman scripting API alongside its own.

Which one is better for API testing? If your tests are code and your team is comfortable in JavaScript, Postman's scripting model is fine. If you want testers who do not write code to build scenarios, assert on the database, and run data-driven suites from a table, Apidog's scenario builder is faster.
